The Elephant In The Room

“Continuing the ongoing discussion about open source software business models, Rich Sharples of Red Hat’s JBoss division weighs in on an issue I have with Savio Rodrigues’s categorization of open source users: namely the fact that it does not take into account the value of the application in question.” - Article

OSS for Biz

The name change is subtle but the meaning now gives direction. This is now a group that is promoting using open source software for businesses. We will still cover all the same main topics but the group meetings will have more direction for discussion. Also this will hopefully give rise to an expanded web presence and further our group.

Open Source Is Mainstream, Now What?

It’s 2008, Open Source Software is now accepted and mainstream. Now what? What does this mean to me and my business? Here’s what you do.

You already have a business, but you aren’t maximizing your IT. It doesn’t matter what kind of IT infrastructure you have, it can be improved via OSS. Every company has a wish list of software or capabilities that they want but can’t afford. Write them down and talk to your CIO and IT manager about them. Have someone research OSS options and possibilities. Pick the top couple and commission a proof of concept for each. You will be pleasantly surprised by the results. And at a cost of $0, the price is right.

Of course there is the time cost, but most employees have a few free cycles they can devote to this. If they are anything like me, they will enjoy these projects. Your options are limitless. You can start as simple as a wiki for your internal website, or go as big as a full LAMP server.

Leave a comment with your questions or success stories.

Linux Shootout: 7 Desktop Distros Compared

“We tested openSUSE, Ubuntu 8.4, PCLinuxOS, Mandriva Linux One, Fedora, SimplyMEPIS, and CentOS 5.1. All performed well, and each had at least one truly outstanding feature.

In the last couple of years, desktop-friendly Linux distributions have taken enormous leaps — they’re easier to install, better maintained, and more powerful than ever before. There’s also that many more of them — which means that many more possibilities to sift through.” - Article

Open Source - Debunking Myths - Part 3

“In part 1 I debunked the “OSS is bad for the economy myth”. In part2 I showed six different models for OSS support. In this third and final post on debunking OSS myths, I will address these two statements:

  • OSS products are second rate (”created in the garage” mentality)
  • OSS can’t be good because it is free”

Open Source - Debunking Myths - Part 2

“In this post I will discuss the myths about open source support. I have heard every quote from “You can’t get support for open source” to “Where are you going to get support, in a chat room?” It is obvious that people who make these statements have not done their homework or just choose to dislike OSS because of their long history of snuggling up with their favorite vendor(s).” - Article
